THis is my seveth lego technic set. It rates right up there with the bulldozer and the tow truck. The power functions are great and it was a blast to assemble.

The picture on the box does not do this set much justice. The set has an extensive number of special technic parts (gears, connectors, liftarms). It is also the first set that uses a motorized turntable (the second was the 8043) excavator. Wether you build the lego models or are into MOCs, this is definitely a must-have set.

Lego Pirate themed sets were first released for sale in 1989.The Lego pirate sets included the first mini figures without a very realistic looking head that only had 2 dots for eyes and a drawn smile. The faces of these minfig pirates did vary from the ones that had painted eye patches and drawn beards and hair.Along with the Lego pirate sets, Imperial Soldiers with blue coats were also released to pursue the plundering pirates (1989 - 1991).These toy soldiers had a definite European look about them.A Lego comic book, The Pirates, and titled "The Gold Medallion" was debuted in 1989 as well. The blue-coated Imperial Soldiers were replaced in 1992 by Imperial Guards, which were on duty through 1995.During this period Lego Pirate sets took on a definite Spanish feel.During 1996 and 1997 the Spanish Armada was on the scene, patrolling the pirate-controlled seas.1997 saw the last few Lego Pirate toy sets being released. This came as a surprise to the many fans of the famous Legos pirates and their surrounding sets. These beloved sets had become one of the company's best selling product lines.A few pirate sets have since been re-released and the pirate theme can be found in a few Lego Duplo sets as well.Captain Redbeard, also known as Captain Roger, was one of the characters in a Lego pirate set released in 1989, and he quickly became one of Lego's most popular pirates. He and his first mate, Rummy, could often be found on a ship in the open seas doing what pirates do best.Robbing and pillaging! There has recently been some very good news for Lego pirate enthusiasts. The company is coming out with more brand new pirate sets in their 2009 releases, which can already be found at some online stores.Lego's timing is on the mark to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first pirate sets from 1989.The new Lego Soldier's Fort set and Brickbeard's Bounty set are but a couple of these new releases.Welcome back! In 1990 Ladybird books, based on the Lego pirate theme were published. There are 4 books in all.Adventure on Shark Island, Captain Roger's Birthday, Will and the Gold Chase, and The Royal Visit. These entertaining books were based on the crew of the Dark Shark and their sea going adventures and clashes with the Broadside Imperial Guards. The stories created a lasting identity for the characters and as a result, expanded the universe of the Lego pirate themed sets.Captain Foul, who was in command of the pirate ship "The Barracuda", was introduced as one of the main characters in the books.Captain Foul, however, never made it to any of the Pirate sets created by the Lego company. For a lot of adults, especially those who enjoyed the first releases of the pirate, adventure themed, Lego sets, the toys are not just mere toys. They are more like childhood souvenirs that they have spent many hours with and can still be enjoyed, eventually handing them down to their own children.Lego toy brick sets, being durable enough to last at least two or more generations, could easily become family treasures handed down from generation to generation! Educational, entertaining and long lasting are just some of the attributes that people love about Lego.
Small children have always loved fiddling with blocks, and as they grow older this love of blocks just gets stronger and stronger, especially once they obtain their first couple of sets of Legos. It is pretty unbelievable just how far Legos have come since my wife and I were little kids. The latest Lego kits really do let your imagination just run wild thanks to such fantastic kits as the Ferrari race car, all kinds of Star Wars kits, and every thing in between. So if you have a little one that is having a birthday shortly you ought to look at perhaps purchasing them a Lego kit or two.It will not merely give them hours of playing fun, but will almost certainly spark their imagination as well.If I was looking to buy a Lego series that nearly every young boy would want, it would have to be the Lego Kingdoms series of kits. All of these amazing Lego kits are based on a knights and castle based theme. The biggest set of this series is the Kings Castle that is a 933 piece set that will allow your little one to build the Kings Castle that includes a functioning front gate, a working draw bridge that moves up and down, and several catapults to guard the castle as soon as it is finished.Of course what good king would be complete with out some sort of arch enemy, and the bad guy in the Kingdoms series is the Dragon Knight. He has his own terrifying prison tower set complete with a princess that has been kidnapped from the good kings castle. If castles and knights are not likely of much interest to your child then there is a second exciting series of kits that is gaining in popularity called the Lego Hero Factory. This Lego series is all about good robots that are produced at the Hero Factory to protect the universe from the bad robots who are trying to take over the known universe. So if your child is into robots then maybe they might be interested in this excellent series of kits instead.

It may surprise you to hear that kids can be entertained by products other than high-tech, high-dollar video game systems, DVDs, and television. They don't have to spend their game-playing time blasting aliens, swinging digital golf clubs, and blowing up buildings.Amazing as it may sound, kids really do enjoy traditional games like board games and card games.Card games are a great way for you to spend more time with your children and get them away from the television. In addition to being fun, card games can be educational. One such fun, educational card game for children is CardWord. The CardWord deck consists of cards with letters on them instead of numbers. The object of the game is to spell words. It's challenging and educational.Another fun, thought-provoking card game for kids which you've probably played yourself is Concentration. This can be played with a conventional deck or you can purchase specially made decks which feature fun pictures, words, numbers, etc.The cards are laid out face-down and the object is to find the matching cards. This game, of course, develops concentration, and almost every kid loves it.Some other old favorites are Old Maid or Go Fish.Probably the most loved of all card games for kids is War.Kids of all ages can learn the simple rules to this game which can keep them occupied for as long as any video game. One of the more acclaimed card games for kids is Apples to Apples Jr.This game consists of cards that on one side have red or green apples on them, and on the other side they have a word with its definition. The object of the game is to match the word on one card that best fits with the word on another. For example, if the word "beach" is laid down, then the winning card will likely be "sun" or "ocean".The winner is determined by a player acting as judge. This allows for a lot of leeway.Uno is a game almost everybody has played.Uno is great because it can be tailored to suit children of all ages.If your child is very young and not able to comprehend complex rules, you can ignore the cards which involve skipping turns, drawing extra cards, and you can ignore the wild cards. With older children, you can utilize the entire deck and you're likely to find yourself in quite the Uno battle with your progeny.Be assured that even if you're playing your best, you'll lose to your kids sometimes, and they'll love it!Card games provide a wealth of educational and entertainment possibilities for children.Even at their most formative stages, children can learn about words and numbers from card games.Card games will improve their concentration and enhance their logical reasoning abilities.
In may 1939, the world was introduced to a new comic hero.Drawn by Bob Kane and written by Bill Finger, Batman immediately captured the attention of fanbase clamoring for something different. What differentiated Batman from other contemporary heroes was the fact that he did not possess any superpowers.Batman fought crime relying on a combination of wit, technology, physical prowess and intimidation striking fear into the hearts of the underworld.Batman's popularity easily transferred into a number of films, television series and toys throughout the decades since his debut. It is no surprise that Batman has produced more action figures than almost any other fictional character.Mego Corporation would be the first to produce toys based on the Caped Crusader. In 1972, Mego secured the rights to produce Batman toys for National Periodical Publications(later DC Comics) and Marvel Comics.Mego would go on to produce a complete line of DC and Marvel action figures under the title "World's Greatest Super Heroes"!".The entire line lasted for a decade between 1972 and 1983 and included a host of popular Batman characters. The line was also expanded to include the popular 1966 Batman tv series with the Batmobile, Batcycle and playsets such as the Batcave. As Mego went out of business in 1984, the Kenner toy company took up the popular DC comic character line and modelled it after their popular Star Wars line making them 5" in scale. In 1990, the Warner Bros feature film Batman release created a demand for Batman toys and Kenner quickly released a line of movie toys which included several versions of Batman, the Joker and the Batmobile.Kenner would also release future Batman toys in line with the subsequent release of Batman movies.Eventually, Kenner would be bought out by Hasbro who would release a line of toys based on the animated series, The New Batman Adventures. The new line dubbed "Mission Masters" created a cartoon look for the Dark Knight which was well received.Over the next few years, Hasbro would release a number of successful Batman lines based primarily around the DC Comic. However, in 2003 Hasbro would relinquish control to Batman's rights to Mattel.Mattel's strategy would also be to release a Batman animated line based upon the WB animated series which would feature more articulation than the previous line. With a new Batman movie released in 2008, the Batman franchise was rebooted and a whole new line of Batman toys were created to mimic the look of the movie characters. However, the film's main villain, The Joker, bore little resemblance to the Heath Ledger character, displaying a simple cartoon like face and not the psychotic look in the movie.A 6 inch line was also produced dubbed The Dark Knight Movie Masters. The first iteration dubbed Wave 1 was of particular popularity and became difficult to find in stores. The Joker figurine became high in demand due to Heath Ledger's death.Throughout the years, Batman has enjoyed the support of major toy licensees eager to produce the latest version of the Dark Knight. This is not surprising, given the Batman's popularity and crossover appeal. With major motion pictures and video games scheduled to be released in the near future, there is no doubt that Batman toys will continue to have a place amongst old and new collectors alike.

Kid's review: This lego set is full of pros and cons. Pros: easy and fun to build, cool minifigure, awesome lightsaber storage, non flickfire missiles, and adjustable wings! Cons: very flimsy wings, unsturdy connections. On the left and right in the middle of the set, there is a 2x2 flat light gray piece on each end. In the extra pieces that come with the set, there are two 1x2 light gray pieces that can be placed next to the 2x2s for extra sturdiness. This set is better for being displayed on a bookshelf than for playing. Hope this review was helpful.

My 8 year old thoroughly enjoyed the process of putting this together. It was a great learning experience on how to follow detailed instructions and the cause and effect of not doing so. The down side is that the little pieces don't stay together well and it can be very frustrating to pretend play with it. If you are looking for something to challenge someone who is creative and likes to build and create something new all the time, it's a great toy. If you are looking for something for a Star Wars fan who likes to imagine and act out their own battles and scenes, stick with a non-Lego toy.
