I bought this set for my sons who are fans of both Thomas and dinosaurs. The individual pieces are great, but I don't know who thought to put these pieces together as a set. There is a crane, but nothing for the crane to lift. When I purchased it, I thought perhaps the dinosaur bones in the cargo car were magnetized, but they don't lift out. The included track pieces also make little sense. The rising track piece has nowhere to go on this set (there's a little tunnel, but no tracks above for an overpass, too). The m/m piece is always a welcome addition to our track collection, but puzzling in this context because the tunnel is m/f, so no adaptation is required. On the other hand, Rheneas is a fairly rare train, and I've never seen a Mr. Percival (the narrow gauge controller) anywhere else. My two-year-old enjoys the "little door" that swings in the tunnel to let the trains through. Both boys really like the dinosaur fossil car, and the crane is a nice size - big... Read more

Animation and Disney Pixar fans everywhere absolutely love Toy Story 3, released in June 2010.Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were both superb, and the overall quality of Pixar Animation Studio films are unsurpassed.No wonder we're excited!The basic plot for Toy Story 3 is that Andy has grown up and is getting ready to go to college.He must part with his toys and so he gives them to Sunnyside Daycare Center.It is at this daycare that all our old friends from the first two Toy Story films meet new characters.Here is the list of new confirmed characters in Toy Story 3.The name in parenthesis is the voice actor (if applicable).Dolly. (Bonnie Hunt) Dolly is a cute floppy felt doll who has big round eyes, purple hair and an orange dress with mismatched buttons.We get to see her with Trixie, Woody and Totoro at the computer in the trailer.Big Baby. This is a giant doll that towers over the other toys at 18 inches tall.Big Baby is your classic baby doll who has a "magical" milk bottle that empties as you feed the doll.This baby's been around the block a few times at Sunnyside Daycare, though.One of the doll's eyes is permanently closed and the pen marks on the body remind me of a tough guy's tattoos.What sort of role is Big Baby set to play in Toy Story 3? Sources say a more major role than we think.Book Worm. He's a cute nerdy little green worm who wears a bow tie and round glasses.Book Worm holds a flash light for you to read your books at night, after you're supposed to be asleep.Seems like a mild mannered fellow.Buttercup. (Jeff Garlin) Don't be fooled by this pretty white unicorn with golden horn, mane and tail.Buttercup is really a male!Chatter Telephone. Based on the real toy, Woody answers Chatter's ring, and the phone says to him, "You and your friends ain't never gettin' outta here." But he actually tries to help Woody and his friends.Chunk. This is a rock monster-type toy with blue eyes and huge fists.He appears briefly in the Toy Story 3 trailer while Ken, Stretch and others are playing cards.Jack-in-the-Box. (Director Lee Unkrich) Upon the arrival of Andy's toys, the Jack-in-the-Box exclaims with joy "New toys!" This toy has a pointy blue hat and an orange and red striped springy body.Ken. Buildable, Interactive Toy Train Measuring 23 inches in length, the train features four different cars: a steam engine, a box car, a passenger car, and - of course - a caboose. Each car has been detailed with an impressive level of detail - from the red cowcatcher grille in front to the translucent windows on the caboose. Kids will enjoy playing with each individual car, linking them together, and rearranging their order. While the train doesn't feature a motor, it can easily be rolled around by hand.
There are plenty of additional features to keep the toy interesting. Our 11-year-old tester especially appreciated some of the more interactive parts of the set - like the opening side doors, trap door ceilings, and rolling wheels. This is a five star train for kids in the 5 to 8 year old range. Older kids may be more interested in the City line trains (7938 and 7939) or the Harry Potter Hogwart's Express train (4841). The City trains, incidentally, are the only ones that come as complete sets with track, motors and remote control devices.
Wow, this is a good looking train! I believe that the photos and box art for the set don't do justice to how it looks when it is built, and how much fun it is to play with. This is an Old West 4-4-0 steam engine, box car, passenger car, and caboose. I would describe the design as more cartoon-like than realistic, with the engine having exaggerated proportions and the cars a tad short. The set includes no track or motor. Yes, the box says ages 8 through 14, but honestly... What 14-year-old is going to be thrilled with a Lego train featuring the Toy Story gang? The age-range/difficulty level seems out of sync with the nature of the toy. Older children will probably not be entranced by the idea of playing with Woody and Rex, and younger children will need assistance with assembly of the components.
On to the product itself:
The contents were very nicely packaged, in what turned out to be separate portions of the instructions tied to the numbered bags of parts. The instructions were very clear, with little text, but with very good three dimensional graphics that provided all the information needed to assemble the various train cars without the annoying text found in so many instructions. While some might disagree, I firmly believe that the creators of Lego developed the perfect toy when they invented those interlocking little plastic blocks so many years ago. From the first minute I played with a set of Lego, I was in heaven. Whatever I might imagine, I could build it, as long as I had enough pieces to snap together to bring my imagination to life. Over time my parents bought more and more pieces for myself and my siblings to play with, and soon we were introduced to "sets" of Lego that were designed to offer the opportunity to build pre-planned designs ( LEGO City Fire Station (7208), LEGO City Police Headquarters). Those sets offered the opportunity to follow instructions to build items in a manner similar to the way someone might assemble a model of a car, boat, or other item, and yet the pieces that came in those...
