Amazon.com Review

This is not the tow truck you call when your car breaks down. This is the tow truck you call when your tow truck breaks down. Designed for heavy-duty lifting and towing, the Tow Truck is among Lego's most challenging, intricate model sets and is intended for serious model builders. It's a part of Lego's Technic line, which shows simplified versions of the workings of real heavy duty machines, such as farm and construction equipment. The set comes with 1,877 pieces and six full-color, illustrated instruction booklets that diagram tow truck model construction in 78 steps and the alternate model heavy-load truck in 95 steps, with many ministeps along the way. With that many pieces, it would be a good idea to grab a plastic portable organizer to make construction and storage a whole lot easier. Its real-world features include rear stabilizers, a working crane, rack-and-pinion steering, and a six cylinder engine with moving pistons and fan. Inside the box you'll find 25 part bags, 2 plastic rods, 10 plastic tires, a sheet of 20 decals, and the instruction booklets. Also included is an illustrated block inventory with part numbers, in case you need to ever re-order a replacement block. --Porter B. Hall

5.0 out of 5 stars Big, black and beautiful, November 6, 2007

This is a wonderful kit providing hours of fun building the two models. I first completed the alternative truck and was pleasantly surprised: it's huge, good looking and a great starting point for a big rig with a conventional trailer - this is a fine model in its own right.

The tow truck is beautiful: hefty and intimidating, fun to play with and a nice display piece - if you have room for it. Compared to the Lego 8421 mobile crane you get more value for money: same number of parts for a lower price but the building takes longer and the secondary model is outstanding.

Only a few minor setbacks: Prepare to spend a couple of hours sorting the bricks, which comes unsorted in twenty-plus plastic bags. And some of the red beams were from different production batches and had distinct color variations, but it helped to sort them into similarly colored groups.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set, but don't pay too much, November 15, 2008

It is one of the best value sets in terms of the number of pieces per dollar, but only if you pay close to the list price of one hundered and twenty. That is what I paid on Amazon, and is currently available on Lego's own web-site. Be wary of other sellers using the Amazon site trying to exploit ill informed customers with grossly inflated prices.

I am a 30 year old AFOL (Adult Fan Of Lego) and have been eagerly awaiting this set since seeing the preview pictures. I must say I was not disappointed when it arrived. Functions include 6-wheel steering (manually operated), extending/retracting outriggers (manually operated) a 6 cylinder engine with pistons that move in and out when the model is rolled on a surface, Pneumatic boom elevation, motorized hoist up/down and 3-section boom extension. The boom can also be (manually) rotated 360 degrees.

This is a set with many functions that will delight mechanical minded folks both young and old. Build time was around 8 hours, and I have assembled many large Technic sets. If this is your first time it may take longer.

The capacity of the crane isn't very much for its size, but it is really designed to showcase mechanical functions more than do actual work.

This set also builds a cherry-picker type aerial lift truck (bucket truck) that looks... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great toy, August 2, 2005

I have not been following the Technic series for quite a while but when I saw this I knew I have to get it. And get it I did. It might be a bit pricey, and personally I don't like motorized pieces because of uncertainty (might go kaputt anytime), but this sure is a looker! However it is not all perfect, IMHO; the outriggers could have been made more powerful (how so is another matter). The turntable could have been geared. There could have been another pair of wheels (imagine). There could have been suspension in the wheels. And the dummy steering wheel in front looks rather ridiculous. But nonetheless this is still a master piece. What's next, a giant fire engine? Count me in!

5.0 out of 5 stars Third lego crane - keep em comin, July 7, 2006
This review is from: LEGO Technic Mobile Crane (Toy)
Another AFOL here. I bought this for my own Christmas present, needed to wait 7 weeks, and finally got to put it together over the spring. There are gobs of nice parts, and the crane does a very good job teaching mechanical concepts. As a learning tool it is a great value. As a parts tool it is a very good value.

From shelf appeal, its better then ... well, a lot of things come to mind!

One thing that is quite odd. The crane hook goes up and down w/ the boom as the boom extends. I reassembled the motor assembly twice, and the box indicates that they are separate control functions. Very odd.

Steering is really neat, motor is fun, dual boom is spiffy, outriggers could have been a bit better, and it would not have been that hard to put a mechanical device in to turn the turntable ...

This crane is a real step up from its 100.00 cousin... and my 4.75 yr old loves it!
