LEGO Review 2010 Modular Set 10197 - Fire Brigade

LEGO Review 2010 Modular Set 10197 - Fire Brigade

The Lego Modular series has been a great hit for the company.Taking the concept of the highly detailed Creator models, beefing them up in piece count and size, adding minifigs and allowing them to be joined together has attracted many older Lego collectors to the line. The Fire Brigade is the last release for 2009 and adds to the three models already released; Market Street, Cafe Corner and Green Grocer.Like other sets in this series the model is made to fit along a main street diorama, so the building comes complete with a segment of shiny sidewalk out the front. Its a beautiful looking building, no surprises there, and it is nice to see a Lego station that isn't all windows or open spaces as the regular line tends to be.This is the first set of this kind to also feature a vehicle, in this case a fire engine modelled after a 1930's fire truck.Like all the modular buildings the set is designed so that the roof and each successive floor is detachable so you can access each level of the station to play and customise.Like the Green Grocer before it, this set has the beginning of playability inside with a ping pong table for bored firemen to bide their time and a fully stocked fridge in the kitchen.Other details include fire-fighting tools, racks for the firemen's helmets, a fire-pole, couch, bookshelf and a roof with a water tower and bell. The set measures 14" (35 cm) high and 10" (25 cm) wide and with over 2200 pieces it is recommended for building by ages 16+.As with most sets in Lego's range, experienced younger builders could build this with a little patience and consideration. If you have the other modular sets its a great addition but would happily serve as the first one on your new Main Street.

LEGO Review 2010 - Grand Emporium 10211

LEGO Review 2010 - Grand Emporium 10211

The next installment of the intricately detailed LEGO Modular Buildings has arrived with set 10211 Grand Emporium. The set follows on from other models in this series including Market Street, Cafe Corner, Green Grocer and Fire Brigade which all join together to create an amazing city street diorama. The detail in these models is amazing and sets them apart from regular models, as does the average recommended building age.At 14+ these models are more in the league of adult collectors who enjoy the attention to detail and design and the intricate build. This set is a model of a three storey department store and its sidewalk entrance area. There are escalators, mannequins in the window, revolving doors, clothing department complete with a cash register and fitting room, a glassware department on the second floor and a toy department on the top floor.Outside window shoppers can send letters and buy an ice cream and gaze up at the window washer suspended from the top floor.A chandelier graces the ceiling inside while a billboard and skylight sit atop the roof. The set has an amazing 2182 pieces which will give you an idea of how many small embellishments are in the model.Out of all the modular buildings Lego has made so far, this set has the most attention paid to the inside. It is almost as if Lego initially envisaged this series as being display-only models but then decided half way through to focus on the inside as well, to make them more interactive. There are many small pieces which add a sense of character to the set and give it a sense of being part of a real "lived-in" Lego city. The model comes with 7 mini figures which isn't a lot for a set this size, but as mentioned earlier the main focus of theses sets is the buildings. The Grand Emporium building measures 15" (38 cm) high and 10" (25 cm) wide and slots nicely alongside any of the other modular sets making an impressive interactive diorama.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Lego Set, December 14, 2008

I splurged on this Lego set and couldn't make myself wait for Christmas to put it together. In all, it took about four or five hours to put together - the set is over 1,600 pieces. There are three stories to the building. The first story is the grocery store, complete with cash register, vegetables and fruits (nice effects), and a refrigerated section. The second story is an apartment with a fireplace and stairs. The third story is a combination apartment/terrace. There is a grandfather clock and old-style heater by the window. The terrace has a grill and furniture.

Other nice effects in the set include a covey underneath the stairs for a mouse to hide in, and a set of mailboxes. Also, the first floor is covered in smooth tiles, giving it a nice texture and look. The mini-figures included in the set are pretty standard.

I prefer this type of set to the Creator sets, because it is built to scale for mini-figure interaction. The building itself is... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars It was a hit!, January 15, 2009

The Lego Green Grocer was a hit with my 12 year old son. The box said for ages 16+, but he had no trouble assembling it on his own. He enjoys constructing the buildings and this one was a hit. He took 3 days to put it together, following the guide books, one level for each day. There is a step-by-step guide book for each level and it was nice that the 2,000+ pieces were divided by levels. He (and I) were fascinated by all the details that were included in the set--very creative. He would love the other sets that could be set up alongside the Grocer.

This set was a blast to put together. I am an AFOL and my 6 and 4 year olds even helped me do certain parts of the building. Each level was broken in to different numbers with direction books for each. Very detailed as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent Lego set... not meant for kids..., January 27, 2011

What you have here is a 1,664 piece marvel of Lego engineering. It never ceases to amaze me as to how well thought out most of Lego's advanced sets are. Sure, there is always room for improvement in some areas. But let's not forget that this "toy" is made up of small, plastic bricks. How amazing is that? I'll break my review down into sections:

General:
Build time: Approx. 6 to 7 hours - It got to be a bit tiresome, but I managed to build the ship on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Keep in mind, I did stop to eat and stretch from time to time. Most people should be able to get this done in probably under 7 hours. I think it took me a bit longer because I didn't separate the pieces well enough, so I spent too much time digging through a bowl of pieces... trying to find that one tiny elusive piece.

Packaging: Packaging is what you'd expect, though I was a bit surprised. There really isn't any rhyme or reason as to why the box is so big. The pieces are all packaged in... Read more

This ship is great. I love the lego pirate theme, and this ship fits right into my collection. The only problem is that it overshadows my other sets when I display them together. I believe it is my favorite lego pirate theme set, I even like it more than my much loved imperial trading post.
This ship is really big. I am surprised lego made a ship of this size, especially for the imperials. I would think a large ship for the pirates would be more popular and sell better, but I am glad that they created this ship instead. It has enough space for 8 cannons below deck! (although it only comes with 4). It is awesome how you can remove the deck to see the cannons below. There are lots of details, such as in the kitchen area below deck, as well as the captain's quarters. The rudder moves (although it is not steered by the wheel), and you can crank up the anchor. If you enjoy the building process, building this ship takes quite a bit of time. You will not snap it together in a... Read more

If you like legos and you like ships, this is a no-brainer. It's very fun to build and very cleverly designed so it's fun to play with. I highly recommend it.
