Lego is a toy for kids.Say that in a group of adults and you will probably see a lot of guilty faces. Many adults harbor a hidden love for this little colored brick that has enchanted kids for decades. Many children who grew up loving Lego are now adults with kids of their own and a disposable income to finally acquire those large sets they coveted as a child. And I won't even talk about companies who pay their employees to play with lego in the name of enhancing creativity and teamwork. If you are one of these adult fans who looks for any excuse to buy bricks for any child within your family radius then there is now a book you can proudly place on your coffee table and say that your child left it there.Actually it is two books, two large hardcovers beautifully bound and stored inside a similarly attractive slipcase.Dorling Kindersley, the publishing company who trademarked the white background photo, has a long history with Lego and their original book released sometime last millennium was a sell-out success.Their recent update builds on that book and amps up the cool/drool factor to the max.The larger book, simply titled "The Lego Book" looks at both the history of the company and the various themes released over the years, while the other, "Standing Small", celebrates the humble minifigure. The Lego Book looks first at the fascinating history of this Danish export and then goes through the process of how a brick is made and packaged into a set.The middle section goes through the main themes Lego have released over the years, including the Town/City, Pirate and Space themes as well as the various licensed themes such as Batman, Harry Potter and Star Wars. This section also includes photos of popular sets throughout the years, and is a boon for fans. The final section takes a look at the larger Lego world including theme parks, clubs and artistic creations.Standing Small then gets up close and personal with minifigures throughout the Lego universe and although it is not exhaustive it covers a lot of area.Apparently there have been 2500 variations on the minifigure made over the years and there are a total of 4 billion minifigs in existence around the world!Priced at $40, this is a great book for you to buy for a Lego fan so you can share your love of Lego with someone who understands.

Lego 2010 Preview - Set 10213 Shuttle Adventure
Space Shuttles have a long and popular history at Lego.Through the years there have been a total of eight Lego sets that have included a space shuttle and on the whole they are some of the brand's best releases. In June 2010 they will add their ninth set to that list with arguably the best of the lot, set 10213, Shuttle Adventure.Coming in at 1204 pieces and with two astronaut minifigures that can sit in the cockpit, the Shuttle Adventure was created as a Lego Designer exclusive in 2010 to commemorate NASA's decommissioning of the Space Shuttle this year. The shuttle itself is 17.5" (44cm) tall and 10" (25.5cm) wide from wing tip to wing tip and comes with retractable landing gear and an opening cockpit and cargo bay.Two detachable solid rocket boosters and a large fuel tank attach to the underneath of the shuttle as it stands ready on the launch pad and a satellite can be deployed from the cargo bay using the inbuilt cargo bay arm. Finally a ground service vehicle carries around a technical support crewperson to attend to final countdown tasks. The designers of the Lego Shuttle have put a lot of thought into this, probably the last, version of the space shuttle and it shows. From the playability of the model to its numerous design features including the way the shuttle demonstrates a forward sloping angle when sitting on its deployed landing gear, the shuttle is a joy to build, play with and display. With such a large piece count younger fans should note that it is recommended for ages 16+ but as with most sets of this size, experience counts for a lot.If kids have had regular experience with Lego then the 16+ age recommendation won't hold much weight. The Space Shuttle Adventure Lego set retails for $99US and is highly recommended.

It never ceases to amaze me as to how well thought out most of Lego's advanced sets are. Sure, there is always room for improvement in some areas. But let's not forget that this "toy" is made up of small, plastic bricks. How amazing is that? I'll break my review down into sections:General: Build time: Approx. 6 to 7 hours - It got to be a bit tiresome, but I managed to build the ship on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Keep in mind, I did stop to eat and stretch from time to time. Most people should be able to get this done in probably under 7 hours. I think it took me a bit longer because I didn't separate the pieces well enough, so I spent too much time digging through a bowl of pieces... trying to find that one tiny elusive piece. Packaging: Packaging is what you'd expect, though I was a bit surprised. There really isn't any rhyme or reason as to why the box is so big. The pieces are all packaged in... I love the lego pirate theme, and this ship fits right into my collection. The only problem is that it overshadows my other sets when I display them together. I believe it is my favorite lego pirate theme set, I even like it more than my much loved imperial trading post. This ship is really big. I am surprised lego made a ship of this size, especially for the imperials. I would think a large ship for the pirates would be more popular and sell better, but I am glad that they created this ship instead. It has enough space for 8 cannons below deck! (although it only comes with 4). It is awesome how you can remove the deck to see the cannons below. There are lots of details, such as in the kitchen area below deck, as well as the captain's quarters. The rudder moves (although it is not steered by the wheel), and you can crank up the anchor. If you enjoy the building process, building this ship takes quite a bit of time. You will not snap it together in a... This review is from: LEGO Creator Maersk Train 10219 (Toy) *Does not include motors or track*I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other train reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. Obviously I am terribly partial to Lego, but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the decision that is right for your kids. I do not receive free sets or compensation for my Lego reviews. Introduced in April of 2011, the Maersk Container train continues the tradition begun with the Emerald Night (10194) of a highly detailed and realistic set designed with the train enthusiast in mind and customizable with Power Function accessories (see below). This is a beautiful set, both in the execution of the engine's lines and the use of Maersk blue bricks. The set is an instant classic and ranks as one of the best trains Lego has produced. Normally I would say that this set would be produced for about two years, but it is already selling briskly (and selling out at Lego stores) so it could... If you (or a child in yor family) are heavily into legos i would recomend being part of the Lego VIP program as you get a point for every dollar spent in store or web site and for every $100 you get $5 for a future set. believe me when i say, the points add up fast 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Tow-Mater-Water (Universe, Milky Way, Solar System, Earth) - See all my reviews = Durability: This review is from: LEGO Creator Maersk Train 10219 (Toy) - NO MOTOR AND TRACK INCLUDED -The name really says it all with this set. It is BREATHTAKING! It is perfect in every way! The detail to the set is unbelievable. The complete train is positively HUGE! (A whopping 9 3/4 inches longer than the Emerald night!) The Maersk blue might be confused with the regular light blue bricks, but it`s a specialty Maersk color! I like the blue container truck.(Which is much bigger than it looks.) The container cars have special train body elements not seen since the 2009 Lego city set "Helicopter transporter". The full set is OVERFLOWING with special/rare elements! Probably about 1/3 of the set is hard-to-find bricks and colors! And by the way, don`t worry about the stickers and instruction book getting all crumply and bent, because now the Lego group put those in a special bag with a peice of cardboard which works great! They look like they just rolled of the printing press! Thank... Read more |
